Lent 2024

Forty days (plus Sundays) from Ash Wednesday on 14th February, is an annual gift of time (echoing Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness) for us to get to know God better. The three traditional ways are through Prayer, Fasting and Giving. Read below for some more ideas.

Ideas for Lent, 2024

Prayer

• Spiritual Gym 7.40am every Tuesday. A short (20 minute) yet spacious celebration of the Eucharist, including 5 minutes’ silence.

• Compline on Zoom Sundays in Lent at 6.30pm. the service of Night Prayer with a reflection on a work of art. Lasts 25 minutes. Hosted by our friends at St John’s Wood Parish Church. Contact their parish office for a link: office.stjohnswood@london.anglican.org

• Pray on the go (or at rest) at any time with the Church of England’s Morning and Evening Prayer. Use the text and/or follow the audio (with beautiful singing)

Fasting & Giving

*This Lent we are holding an appeal for Murgwanza Hospital governed by the Anglican Diocese of Kagera. Click on our Lent Appeal button below for more information.

*In the year when our world’s climate breached the 1.5 degree threshold, why not use Lent as a time to take less and give more in relation to God’s creation? A Rocha’s Go Green for Lent is full of ideas, from digital fasting to spending more time in nature (even in the city).

Feeling bookish?

The Church Times has an excellent round-up of books for Lent. Among them are:

• A Truth Universally Acknowledged – 40 Days with Jane Austen (Canterbury Press) Poet archdeacon Rachel Mann meets Austen’s characters as she explores our relationship with God as the key to our identity and our relationships with others.

• The Infernal Word: Notes from a rebel angel (Canterbury Press). Nick Papadopulos, Dean of Salisbury, takes us into the character of God via six biblical mountain tops, all told from the point of view of one of Satan’s rebel army.

Church House Bookshop in Westminster (14 Tufton St SW1P 3QZ) is a good source, in person or online.
